Service Description

Teen Mindfulness and Yoga Workshop Saturday Morning 9AM to 12 PM: Teenagers, ages 11 to 18, are undergoing several life changes encompassing physical, mental, emotional, and social development. This yoga class focuses on mindful meditation and breathing exercises to bring teens to the present moment and practice changing those things that are in their control internally rather than stressing about their external environments. This helps them regulate cognitive function through social emotional and brain-based learning. Teens connect with themselves and with their external environments by being mindful of their feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations through the practice of yoga poses, partner work, breathing and relaxation, and off-the-mat activities. Each class will offer one challenging pose with modifications to give adolescent yogis a goal to attain through their strength practice. Teen Positive Psychology and Reading Workshop Saturday Afternoon 1 PM to 4 PM: Teenagers who exercise literacy expand their knowledge and cultivate an environment where they generate a curiosity and thirst for knowledge. Reading improves concentration and exercises the mind, improves writing skills, and improves overall health and joy, and reading with a positive psychology basis helps teens focus on what makes life most worth living from an individual and societal standpoint. A book will be picked by the instructor for reading and discussion that will focus on typical adolescent problems and positive solutions to those problems. Teens will read or be read to each week from the week's assigned pages, and will engage in mindful and positive discussion about how that book's theme relates or doesn't relate to their own story. Discussion is used to engage teens, and to help them develop a sense of self and empathy for others; critical thinking skills; and to stop negative thinking patterns that halt creativity and problem-solving, opening up doorways to peer communication and positive solutions. Teen Team Building and Social Workshop Sunday Afternoon 1 PM to 4 PM: Teenagers are often looking for activities to fill down-time. Get them out from behind a television screen and let them engage in social activities that stimulate their cognitive and emotional thinking. Teens will be offered board games, team building games, and interactive games during social hour that help them bring mindfulness into focus in an interesting and fun way!
