Poetry Saturday Morning Retreat 9 AM to 12 PM: Poetry is literature that typically evokes a concentrated imaginative awareness of one’s experiences and emotions through the use of language that has been arranged for meaning, sound, and rhythm. Practitioners of oral interpretation bring stories to life. In this class we explore writing prompts to create dynamic stories and poetry that can be performed or explored individually by the writer. Creative Art Journaling Saturday Afternoon Retreat 1 PM to 4 PM: Smashbooking is a form of art journaling wherein the creator engages in the process of taking scraps and other artistic elements and incorporating aspects of the creative writing and poetry writing process to create another form of expression in visual art form. Teens, aged 12 to 18 will be given the opportunity to create various forms of creative writing and artistically save their writing creations in the form of smashbooking or take their writing over to the slam poetry and oral interp class to perform publicly during our summer program (See Teen Slam Poetry and Oral Interp Camp). Those teens that do not wish to compete or sign up for the extended camp will learn the basics of these techniques and experience peer demonstrations throughout this week's camp. Painting & Drawing Sunday Afternoon 1 PM to 4 PM: Research shows that teenagers who engage in the arts: drawing and painting, develop many positive skills and capacities that are valued by future employers. Drawing is typically an exercise in persistence; shading takes concentration and motivation. This class offers opportunities to create group paintings where we learn collaboration, creative thinking, and problem-solving skills. Leadership is a result of confidence, and artistic expression decreases feelings of anxiety, anger, and depression by fostering a greater sense of self-awareness and helping regulate emotions. This course focuses on different cognitive and art therapy drawing and painting projects to help teens bring mindfulness to their every day lives. Each class is self-contained and does not build on itself, new projects are introduced weekly, and are completed within the time frame designated for each class. This course is for any teen who wishes to dig deep into their psyche and bring problems to the surface through their drawing and painting expression, and to learn from what they create to help them problem solve and become more self-aware.
